Use of regional nerve blocks in postoperative pain control: benefits and challenges Abstract

Abstract Postoperative pain management is an essential component in the recovery of surgical patients. Regional nerve blocks have gained prominence as an effective strategy to reduce opioid use and minimize adverse effects such as nausea, sedation, and dependence. Techniques such as transverse abdominis plane (TAP) block in abdominal surgeries and brachial plexus block in orthopedic procedures have been shown to improve pain control and reduce hospital stay. However, the limited duration of the analgesic effect and the need for specialized training in regional anesthesia remain challenges. This review analyzes the available evidence on the benefits and limitations of using regional nerve blocks, emphasizing their role in enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols. Keywords: Regional anesthesia, nerve blocks, postoperative pain, opioids, ERAS.
